History of rugby
Originally, the modern game of rugby was believed to have been created after William Web Ellis picked up a football and ran with it. These origins are why the Rugby World Cup features the Web Ellis name. However, most consider this to be fiction. In reality, variants of football that included handling the ball began to emerge from a number of English schools in the early 1800s. The game’s name was even derived from that of one of first school to play it, the Rugby School in Warwickshire, England.
The Rugby School outlined the first set of rules for the game in 1845. By the late 1800s rugby’s popularity had grown significantly and in 1871 the Rugby Football Union was formed becoming the game’s first governing body. That same year, the first Rugby international was played with Scotland facing England in Edinburgh with the Scots winning 1-0.
The game’s popularity continued to grow through the 1900s with Australia and South Africa playing internationals against the like of Scotland and England. Finally, in 1987 the first Rugby World Cup was played in Australia and New Zealand with the later becoming the tournament’s first champions. The game would remain an amateur sport all the way up to 1995 when the IRB finally declared the game “open”.
